The Comet's cup campaign started with a an away fixture at Barleylands. We were expecting a tough game against the Hawks as we had only narrowly beaten them in the league. Our starting line up was:
The game got off to a flying start with Ola having a shot on goal inside the first couple of minutes. A well worked ball from Cain to Ola led to our first goal on 3 minutes 0-1 Comets. FC Redwing were determined to bounce straight back and applied pressure forcing 2 consecutive corners. Thomas and Ryan were up to the challenge though, backed up by Mitch, Ola and Cain. Mitch, Ola and Cain were winning the midfield battle when pushing forward with some great link-up play with Wale up front. Redwing were dangerous on the counter attack not allowing us to sit back on our 1 goal lead. Brad was on hand making some great saves. We one a succession of corners, Ola drifted in a high that landed at Wale's feet for a clinical tap-in. Goal 0-2 Comets Shortly before half time Mitch was rested with Brandon coming on, Joe came on for Wale. The end-to-end play continued to the half time whistle. Half-time bought a couple of changes, Alex B on for Ryan at L Back, Alex E (flown in this morning from Switzerland!) on for Cain. Alex B was called into action from the whistle as Redwing's team talk at half time had inspired them into an all out assault. Alex was unrattled and settled into his usual pairing with Tom who had been as solid as ever. The Hawks had a dangerous shot on goal that just went wide inside the first two minutes Their efforts were rewarded a couple of minutes later as they made a run at the heart of our defence with a fine finish Goal. 1-2 We continued to push up the wings with Alex E and Brandon playing an integral part of our attack, with Joe latching onto any balls and worrying their defence. Brandon was rested with Jason coming on at R midfield. Wale replaced Joe, resuming his place up front. Redwing's goal proved to be a wake-up call and the boys all stepped up a gear. Tom and Alex were quick to close down any attacks, moving the ball out to Jason and Alex E to push forward. Cain replaced Alex E who had played brilliantly (considering he was in Geneva the night before). Cain made an immediate impact putting the ball in the back of the net from Ola's corner. Goal 1-3. The boys continued to apply pressure with Wale looking dangerous up front and was rewarded with a goal in the last couple of minutes. 1-4 Both teams continued to break with shots on goal but the score remained unchanged at the final whistle. A great performance that ensured we progress to the next round to face Coryton Flames on Sunday 27th November
Well done boys Darren
