The Comets sixth league game of the season saw
them travelling to Stanford le Hope for an away game against Corringham
Cosmos City. After the last bruising encounter between the two sides
early in October, this fixture had all the promise of an entertaining
game and the supporters of both teams were not disappointed.
The action started from the first kick of the game with a blistering
shot delivered by the City forward from his centre kick. Fortunately
the ball sailed over the bar leaving Bradley looking unperturbed, but
City had made their intentions clear. The Comets would need to battle
hard in order to come away with any points from this game.
Thomas took the game straight back to City with a well delivered spot
kick that put the ball into the City half, launching Cain, Ola and Wale
into an attack on the opposition goal. City defended in numbers and
soaked up the pressure. As soon as the ball broke free they counter
attacked. With Mitchell covering the midfield and the defensive duo
of Alex at left back and Thomas on the right, the attack was soon repelled
and the Comets launched themselves into another attack on the City goal.
This set the pattern of the game, with the Comets attacking, City defending,
counter attacking and in turn the Comets defending. Five minutes gone
and a harsh penalty decision against the Comets for hand ball gave City
the opportunity that they had been working hard to create. The opportunity
wasn't wasted and the ball was blasted into the net - one nil. This
only served to strengthen the Comets resolve to take the game straight
back to City and the team moved up a gear.
Up stepped Ola for the centre kick and he delivered a screamer of a
shot, which exploded into the back of the net, leaving the City goal
keeper completely stranded. One all and game on! The pattern of attack
and counter attack continued until half time, with Cain, Ola, Wale and
Mitchell all coming close with attempts on goal and Bradley, Alex and
Thomas in the Comets defence bravely resisting strong pressure from
City.
The start of the second half saw Alex E coming on for Cain at left midfield
and Brandon for Mitchell at right midfield. Both players very quickly
adapted to the high tempo of the game, with Brandon making a number
of decisive tackles which broke down the opposition attacks and Alex
E some blistering runs at the City defence. Both teams were putting
100% into the game with the play moving from end-to-end.
Ten minutes into the second half Ryan came on for Alex B at left back
and a few minutes later Mitchell came on for Thomas at right back. With
the pattern of the game resuming to attack and counter attack the coaching
team were looking for an opportunity to make their final two substitutions.
As soon as the ball went out of play Joe came on for Wale at centre
forward and Jason came on for Brandon who had given 110% effort. Joe
made his contribution to the game with a few darting runs through the
City defence and Jason came close to scoring with a couple of headers
on goal, one from a long throw by Ola, the other from a well delivered
corner from Mitchell.
Five minutes to go and with the result hanging in the balance the Comets
supporters were worked into a frenzy. The Comets were virtually camped
out in the City half with numerous attacks on goal. Strong City counter
attacks were broken up by robust challenges from Mitchell and superb
covering tackles by Ryan, with Bradley safely scooping up the loose
ball.
At the final whistle both teams had fought to a standstill and thoroughly
deserved one point a- piece. Well played
Comets, another outstanding performance!Paul
