Sunday 2nd October

FC Redwing Hawks (2) vs LTD Comets (3)

The second league game of the season saw the Comets travelling to a chilly Barleylands, where they played FC Redwing Hawks.

The boys made a strong start to the game and dominated the first 10 minutes with some good attacking moves from the midfield trio of Cain, Wale and Mitchell, with Cain's putting in some great individual runs down the left of the pitch.

Their attacking play was rewarded after 10 minutes with a through ball to Cain from Wale, which Cain dribbled past the defender and slotted home for the first goal. Joe kept their defenders busy with some good runs in the box and 5 minutes later Mitchell dribbled the ball down the right side of the pitch, crossed it to Cain, who again took the ball round the defender and hammered home his second goal.

FC Redwing started to pressure the Comets a little after this, but Alex B at left back and Thomas at right back put in some great tackles with Bradley pulling off more than a few saves. Going into half time the Comets were 2 nil up and after the break Brandon came on in place of Cain, who deserved a much-needed rest, and Alex E played up front in place of Joe.

Shortly into the second half, Alex E picked the ball up deep within the Comets own half, ran at the opposition, turned an FC Redwing defender and drilled the ball into the net for the third goal. Again, FC Redwing Hawks came back at the Comets with some strong pressure down our left side, which was absorbed by Brandon and Alex with some great covering tackles. 10 minutes into the second half Jason took over from Brandon and continued to lend support to the defence as well as support the attacking play.

With 5 minutes to go a tactical decision by the coaching team saw Wale and Mitchell substituted for Joe and Cain, with Joe now playing up front, Alex E in central midfield and Jason and Cain at left and right midfield respectively. Whilst the Comets were settling in to their positions FC Redwing took the opportunity to apply even more pressure and scored 2 quick goals.

With only a few minutes of the game left FC Redwing hemmed the Comets into their own half, but some great defending by Alex B and Thomas and a few goal-line saves by Bradley kept the score at 3 – 2 and ensured that the Comets had earned 3 points at the final whistle.

This was another great battling performance by the whole team, well done!
