Sunday 25th September LTD Comets (5) vs Wickford Town Jaguars (2) |
A great start to the season. After a long summer break the boys were eager to get their campaign off to a positive start. The fixture was originally away although this was switched to our new home ground at William Edwards school. We would therefore enjoy the advantage of home support. We had a full squad of ten to select from and started with:
From the whistle we made our intentions clear that the Comets were going to be a force to be reckoned with this season. A positive start led to a well worked move from Mitch pushing up on the right flank to slot an exquisite pass into Wale for a clinical finish. GOAL within 3 minutes. Positive play (akin to West Ham) did lead to us rushing back when Wickford broke although our defensive duo of Thomas and Alex were on hand standing firm with some deft, well timed tackles. After some end to end play the Jaguars managed to find the back of our net. Brad, with arms out-strecthed was just unable to tip it round the post. 7 minutes on the clock and it was all square. Our midfield trio of Mitch, Wale and Cain were unrattled by this and continued with some great link-up play. Alex E ran at the defence and whistled in a long distance shot that just went wide. After 15 mins Wale picked the ball up from the centre circle and ran straight at the heart of their defence and nearly broke the net of the Wickford goal. 2-1 we were back in front. We were winning the midfield battle with Alex E and Mitch both pushing the play up the flanks, deep into the Wickford half with some probing runs. This was rewarded with a goal by Wale a hat trick in the first half. We went into the break with a 2 goal advantage. Alex E and Cain were rested at half time after playing their hearts out. Brandon came on at Left midfield and Joe up front. Wale made the same start to the second half with a goal inside the the first couple of minutes. 4-1 Jason was bought on for Mitch after 5 minutes. Wickford town were not giving up and they pulled back another goal. 4-2 and continued to push to close the gap. Brandon and Jason however were able to control any push forward down the wings by the Jaguars. Wickford were really putting on the pressure and won a succession of corners. We were back and defending in numbers. Bradley made several crucial saves and ensured that we were not going to concede any more goals. Joe latched onto a pass out of midfield, rounded their left back and slotted a ball at an angle into the corner of their goal. 5-2 We continued to attack and defend with purpose. Jason came off injured with a couple of minutes to go and was replaced by Mitch. We saw out the rest of the game as eventual 5-2 winners. This was a great performance boys. The win was thoroughly well deserved both for your efforts on the pitch and in training.
